General Skilled Migration Visa

Skilled Migration stream is created to attract the overseas workforce to boost the economy when local workers are not available. This is the reason international overseas graduates, international Australian graduates and all skilled workers can choose to apply for Permanent residency through Skilled Migration visa.

There are various subclasses in GSM.

Skilled independent Visa-189 visa

189 visa is most sought-after visa as this subclass lets skilled workers let live and work in Australia permanently. The Skilled Independent applicants do not need any nomination from State, Family or the employer -as the name suggests. This visa category has 3 streams:
1- Point Tested Stream: This visa subclass is point tested. Applicant must be able to score 65 points or above. Applicants must submit Expression of Interest ( EOI) in Skillselect before they can get invited to apply for the visa.
2- New Zealand Stream: Must be the holder of subclass 444 and must meet income threshold in last 3 out of 5 years.
3- Hongkong Stream: This visa lets eligible Hong Kong or British National (Overseas) passport holders who have demonstrated commitment to Australia, live and work in Australia permanently.

Skilled Nominated Visa ( Subclass 190)

Applicant must be nominated by Australian State or territory.
This visa is also point tested and requires applicants to meet minimum point score, competent English and skill assessment. Applicants must submit Expression of Interest ( EOI) in Skillselect before they can get invited to apply for the visa.All state and territory government agencies have their own criteria for deciding who they will nominate.

Skilled Work Regional ( Provisional ) Visa -Subclass 491 ( subclass 489 prior to 16 November 2019)

From 16 November 2019, The Department of Immigration replaced subclass 489 with 491 with few alterations. Subclass 491 lets skilled workers to let live and work in regional Australia for 5 years. Applicant can apply for Permanent residency visa subclass 191 after meeting the requirements of subclass 191 visa after 3 years of 491 grant.

SKILLED REGIONAL VISA (SUBCLASS 887)

Visa 887 is the permanent stage acquired after meeting the criteria for the Skilled Regional Provisional Subclass 489 holders. Visa 489 holders must live in the required region of Australia for 2 years and work full time there for 12 months to qualify for this visa.

TEMPORARY GRADUATE VISA (SUBCLASS 485)

This visa is for international students who have recently graduated from an Australian educational institution. It lets you live, study and work in Australia temporarily after you have finished your studies. Students are only able to access the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) once as a primary applicant.

Permanent Residence (Skilled Regional) visa (subclass 191)

This visa subclass offers permanent residency to certain provisional subclass holders such as 491 visa holders. This visa will commence after 16 November 2022.

RECOGNISED GRADUATE (SUBCLASS 476)

An 18-months’ work visa for recent engineering graduates from selective institutes overseas.
